The Big Garden Birdwatch 2018

At the end of January each year is the annual Big Garden Birdwatch survey which is organized by the RSPB (sorry this is only available in the UK). It is the biggest wildlife participation event of its kind and if you’ve read this blog before you will know I enjoy it and take part too. 🙂

This year was no different, it takes an hour and it involves counting the maximum number of separate different bird species at any one time within that hour – here’s a link for how to go about the count and other interesting facts from the RSPB website: RSPB

Here’s my list this year and the totals:

  • Blackbird – 1
  • Blue tit – 1
  • Chaffinch – 1
  • Feral pigeon – 8
  • Greenfinch – 1
  • Goldfinch – 13
  • Collared dove – 1
  • Great spotted woodpecker – 1
  • House Sparrow – 12
  • Starling – 21
  • Siskin – 3
  • Wood pigeon – 2
  • Total – 65

The total of 65 birds from 12 different species is pretty good, although some species seem to disappear when the birdwatch starts. :S

I am really happy that my garden is offering a good amount of wild space and lots of food for the birds and other animals too! 🙂

Did you take part and how did you get on?
